Solar Panels use light energy (photons) from the sun to generate electricity. The term "photovoltaic" originates from the words "photo", meaning light, and "volt", a measure of energy.
Solar panels are made up of small photovoltaic cells. Light particles (photons) from the sun's rays hit the cells and release electrons which create a DC current. The electricity is converted into an AC current and feeds into the electric grid.
Photovoltaic cells are made of silicon, which is manufactured from sand, another abundant natural resource on our planet.
Natural sunlight is sufficient to produce electricity from photovoltaic panels and direct sunlight produces optimal results. The stronger and more direct the sunlight, the more current is produced.
